Crimestoppers are offering two £1,000 rewards for information leading to the arrest of two prolific burglars from Barnsley.

The rewards are for Stephen Russell Berry, aged 43, and Stephen Michael Shaw, aged 41, both from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, who are believed to be prolific burglars in several areas including Lincolnshire.

The pair have stolen thousands of pounds worth of property from around 30 burglaries.

In one of the burglaries, a 93-year-old woman was asleep in her bed when she was awoken by a torch shining in her bedroom.

She noticed the two men in her room, with one searching through her bedside drawers. She shouted at the offenders and they ran away.

However, she found they had taken jewellery and her handbag. The offence has left the lady terrified.

Crimestoppers will give the £1,000 reward per offender for information passed to the charity’s 0800 555 111 number only, that leads to an arrest and conviction.

Gemma Wilson, Crimestoppers Yorkshire and Humberside Regional Manager, said: “Stephen Berry and Stephen Shaw are believed to be responsible for a huge number of crimes.

“Burglary is terribly distressing for victims as it can make people afraid to be in their own homes as well as immensely upset at the loss of belongings; particularly when family heirlooms and other items of great sentimental value are taken.

“Crimestoppers would urge anyone with information to contact the charity anonymously, safe in the knowledge that no one will ever know you contacted us.”

More than £250,000 will be invested to upgrade the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) equipment in Lincolnshire.

Police and Crime Commissioner Alan Hardwick announced the investment on Monday, March 17.

When a vehicle passes an ANPR device, its registration number is read and instantly checked against a national database records of vehicles of interest.

Police officers can then stop a vehicle, check it for evidence and, where necessary, make arrests.

ANPR data from Lincolnshire Police is submitted to the National ANPR Data Centre (NADC) where it is stored together with similar data from other forces for two years.

ANPR has been used in the detection of many offences, including locating stolen vehicles and returning them to their owners, dealing with uninsured drivers, finding missing people and solving cases of serious and organised crime.

In addition to being mounted within police vehicles, ANPR cameras within Lincolnshire Police are used at several fixed locations, which are undisclosed.

PCC Alan Hardwick said: “I have always been committed to making policing in Lincolnshire as efficient and effective as possible.

“Making use of technology like this is an obvious way of doing that. ANPR has over recent years proved itself as an invaluable tool for keeping the people of Lincolnshire safe.

“It also means when a crime does take place, our officers have the best, most up to date crime fighting tools at their disposal,” he added.

A group of men suspected of operating a cable theft gang have been arrested in the Lincolnshire area.

British Transport Police raided addresses in Lincoln, Grantham, Newark, Wellingborough and Doncaster, arresting 10 men on suspicion of cable theft.

Over 90 officers attended the early morning raids, carrying out house searches and seizing a number of items for forensic examination, including cutting tools, mobile phones, computers and laptops, receipts and bank statements.

In Lincoln, a 25-year-old man was arrested, with four men aged 22, 29, 39 and 40 arrested in the Grantham area.

Three men, aged 22, 23 and 44 were arrested in the Doncaster area. Another man aged 34 was arrested in Newark and a 44 year-old man was also arrested in the Wellingborough area.

All ten men are now being questioned in police custody.

Detective Inspector Stuart Mellish, leading the operation, said: “These arrests follow a complex seven-month investigation by officers from Operation Leopard, BTP’s team of officers dedicated to tackling cable theft.

“We believe this organised gang have been working together to steal cable, valued in the region of over £1.2 million, from across England over a one year period.

“Railway cable theft is blighting our infrastructure and disrupting the lives of ordinary people on a daily basis, but we have teams of officers dedicated to tackling the problem and who have been really effective.

“Recently we’ve seen significant reductions in cable-related offences on the railway in the North East — a 69% reduction, which is great news.”

He added: “I’d like to thank members of the public for their ongoing support in helping us in tackling this crime and ask that people continue to report any suspicious behaviour near the railway, or in their communities, to police so we can work together to drive this crime down further.”
