Motorists in Lincolnshire drove away from petrol stations in the county without paying for their fuel almost 500 times in just two years.

Fuel thefts are costing petrol station owners thousands of pounds each year and Lincolnshire Police say they are assisting businesses with their security arrangements to combat the offence.

Figures obtained by The Lincolnite through a Freedom of Information request show that in the year 2015 some 252 fuel thefts from petrol stations were reported – eight more than in the year previous.

The hotspot for fuel-thieving motorists appeared to be in North and South Kesteven, where 89 offences were reported last year.

In the Lincoln and West Lindsey districts, 75 offences were reported, in East Lindsey there were 41 and in the Boston and South Holland region, 47 people drove off without paying for their petrol or diesel.

Of the total reported in 2015, some 155 cases were resolved and the investigation closed with no suspect having been identified. Some 14 incidents are currently classed as ongoing.

Twenty one cases resulted in an offender being charged for the theft and other incidents were resolved with a restorative resolution or were deemed ‘of no further interest’.

A Lincolnshire Police spokesperson said: “We investigate all of the reports we get where people have driven off without paying for their fuel. Quite often it’s an oversight and the matter can be resolved.

“Our crime prevention staff offer advice and visit our petrol stations to make sure where possible they have recording facilities and staff are trained to be alert to this offence.

“There are various ways of gathering evidence and where this is available we will always investigate the offence.

“People who do not pay for their fuel will be known to others, we would welcome any information to help us target offenders.”

The force encourages anyone with information relating to crime in the county to call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

“Sexual predator” and dad of three Jason Lawrance has been jailed for life for raping women he found on internet dating site Match.com, including victims in Lincolnshire.

Jason, aged 50, used two profiles to connect with thousands of women online and has been sentenced to a minimum jail term of 12 years and six months after he raped five women and attacked two more.

Described by judge Gregory Dickinson as “devious, manipulative and highly dangerous”, Lawrance committed the attacks just months after marrying a woman he met on the site.

Specifically, he had targeted widows and divorces, using profile names KeepItStraightToday and StraightManLooking to speak with hundreds of women at a time.

As previously reported, the assaults took place between June 2011 and November 2014 in Lincolnshire, Derbyshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire.

Lawrance, from Hampshire, was arrested by Lincolnshire Police in July 2013 for the attempted rape of a victim in the county, but was let go by police without charge.

Lawrance, a former company director turned self-employed builder, had persuaded his victims to give him their personal contact details by claiming he could not upload a photo to his online profile.

When they asked to see his image, he said he would send one to their personal email instead and he would then move the conversation away from the Match.com messaging system.

On one occasion, he texted a woman following his attack, apologising for ‘hurting her’ and saying: “When you were crying out for me to stop I couldn’t, I’m so mad at myself xxx.”

The court heard that Lawrance raped another woman in the back of a van which he had parked in a field in Northamptonshire, while a third was attacked at her home while her son was asleep in a nearby bedroom.

He was arrested after a friend of a woman who was raped in Derbyshire in November 2014 got in touch with the police.

A cohort of trainee Lincolnshire police officers have been congratulated after raising thousands of pounds for a charity close to their hearts.

For each new intake of student officers, Chief Constable Neil Rhodes sets the task of choosing a charity and raising as much cash as possible.

Cohort 17 certainly embraced that challenge with a fundraising plan which has seen a total of over £2,600 raised, with a valentine’s day raffle and cake sale netting over £700 alone.

The chosen charity, the British Heart Foundation, was picked by the group in honour of PC Terry Stamp and Nicolette Bosworth (partner of cohort 17’s PC Callum McDonald).

Terry survived a heart attack last year, and Nicolette become involved with the charity following her own heart surgery.

The cohort also held a Christmas jumper day, took part in the Lincoln Santa Fun Run and arranged for donation bags to be filled by staff.

Four brave representatives even took part in the Airfield Anarchy Frostbite challenge. This included 60 hurdles and obstacles to tackle over eight kilometres.

The last event was held on at Wragby Road Tesco in Lincoln where the cohort conducted a cycle challenge, adding another £250 to the total raised.

Chief Constable Neil Rhodes said: “My challenge to the student officers was to raise £1,000 for charity. I thought that they might raise a few hundred pounds, I hoped they might just raise £1000, I never expected them to raise anything like the amount they have.

“I have been amazed by their energy, their tenacity, and their sense of fun. I think it is tremendous that as a team they have managed to raise £2,600.

“I am really proud of them. If they put as much energy into policing the streets as they have into raising this money, then that bodes very well for the future.”

Reported child sex offences rise by 40% in Lincolnshire, charity reveals

The number of child sex offences reported to Lincolnshire Police rocketed to almost 600 last year, a rise of 40% on the previous 12 months.

Figures obtained by the NSPCC from Lincolnshire Police show that 598 cases of child sexual abuse were reported in the county in 2014/15, compared with 423 the year before.

Of the offences recorded in Lincolnshire, four crimes were against one-year-olds, five concerned two-year-olds and eight three-year-olds.

Some 80% of the offences recorded involved female victims, with a proportion of reports relating to historic offences.

There were 105 reports of rape of a girl under the age of 13 and 28 instances of voyeurism reported in the county.

Country-wide, the findings equalled five child sex offences being reported every hour with 45,456 reports recorded last year.

Some 41,457 of those recorded in England and Wales included rape, grooming and sexual assault.

Peter Wanless, NSPCC CEO said: “This dramatic rise is deeply worrying and shows just how extensive this appalling crime has become, claiming many victims every day, every hour.

“Sexual abuse can shatter a child’s mental health. It can leave them anxious, depressed and even suicidal. That is why it is crucial every single child who has endured abuse and needs support must get timely, thorough help so they can learn how to handle disturbing emotions and behaviours and rebuild their lives.”

Lincolnshire Police Detective Superintendent Nikki Mayo said: “We attribute much of the increase in reported offences to victims bravely now feeling able to come forward and report historic sex offences against them as children, often decades earlier.

“It is also more widely known that we and our partners are able to offer much more support for victims than in earlier years.

“I feel that victims now come forward more confident that we will believe what we say and that they will achieve some justice and some closure regarding events that have sometimes haunted them for many years. The same feelings apply to children who have suffered in more recent times.

“We also recognise that the exploitation opportunities provided by the internet in respect of on-line grooming is an emerging issue.

“I would encourage anyone who has any information about a child being abused or who they fear might be at risk to call us on ‘999’ if the abuse is imminent or happening there and then.

“In less urgent circumstances they should call the 101 non-emergency number. Alternatively they can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.”

Data mistake

One section of the figures showed that five sexual reports were received concerning children under the age of one.

This has been dismissed by Lincolnshire Police, who state that the data they provided concerning children under one was incorrect.

Detective Superintendent Nikki Mayo added: “The age of some of the children provided in the figures is of particular concern especially where the figures suggest that five babies under one year were assaulted.

“We have looked into each of those five offences and discovered that the data we provided to the NSPCC in that age category was incorrect.

“When working through the Freedom of Information request for data and interrogating our systems it seems our IT systems have provided us with inaccurate basic information.

“We have since closely examined each of the five cases mentioned. Whilst they all still involve offences against children, it transpires that each of the victims was much older than the information indicated and were committed against substantially older children and not babies.”

Lincolnshire pensioner, 92, conned out of £23k in phone scam

A 92-year-old Lincolnshire woman has been swindled out of £23,000 in less than a week after receiving a number of fraudulent telephone calls.

The victim, from Grantham, had received calls from March 3 from a man claiming to be from Barclays Bank.

He convinced her that there was a Barclays internal investigation into activity on her bank account and that she should transfer her money into another account to protect her assets.

He provided her with the new account details. She was reluctant to discuss this with anyone else as the offender persuaded her that the whole investigation was highly confidential.

Not content with £23,000, the fraudster has continued to call the victim in an effort to extort more funds.

The matter has now been referred to Action Fraud and an investigation is underway.

Lincolnshire Police say this type of offence is becoming increasingly common, with swindlers making multiple calls, often claiming to be from a bank or that they are police officers, until they latch onto an elderly or vulnerable potential victim. They work from a script and can be very plausible and persuasive.

A Lincolnshire Police spokesperson offered the following advice:

“Please be aware that no bank, building society, financial organisation, public body or the police will ever contact you in this way, or ask you to transfer funds or reveal account numbers, passwords or PIN numbers.

“Please try to look after elderly or vulnerable family members, neighbours or friends. Try to ensure that they do not fall prey to these despicable criminals who will take an their life savings without a second thought.

Please see advice from Action Fraud on their website.
